This was the first course I did with other members of the Army. At the time all Corps and Regiments in the Army had their own clerks to carry out the administrative functions. (Later this function was carried out by members the the Adjutant Generals Corps (AGC)).
I did not want to be a Clerk by trade in the RCT, but it was a pre-requisite to becoming a Movement Controller as the Movements trade involved a lot of administration tasks. It was a gamble we all took as if we failed our Movement Controller courses we instantly reverted back to the trade of Clerk (which I certainly did not want to do).
The course was 4 weeks! at the Royal Army Ordinance Corps (RAOC) training Depot ,Blackdown Barracks, Deepcut. (a place I would return to 15 years later!)
We (ex Junior Leaders) were all led astray by the “old and bolds” from other regiments. We were always being bollocked by someone! (Permanent/RP Staff etc) I remember one guy (can’t emember his name) but he was a Cpl in the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards(5th Skins) he was a scouser and a group of us led by him!! Always had a few Bacardi & Cokes at Lunchtime!! Before returning to our typing classes.
The typing classes were run by a couple of middle aged women (Ms White! + 1) we had to learn touch typing and if we looked at the key board they would rap our fingers. They also used to have a WHIP which they would crack (or maybe this was just my 17 year old mind & the Bacardi working overtime)
Particular Memories:
Learning how to seal a envelope with Secret documents inside to stop Russian Agents getting the document out with out us knowing!! (I would like to say I used this skill again, But!!)
The “Cannon Club” this was the Junior Ranks Club, it had a dance floor that lit up (hey its was good in them days!!)
Doing a duty as Duty Driver in a Landrover (better than staging on) and driving round without any lights on all night as I couldn’t remember how to turn them on!
An interesting drive in the back of the 4 toner that took us Brookwood Rail Station at the end of the course. It seems the RP had told the driver to clip every curb, hit every bump in the road etc just to get their own back (they always win!)
On Completion of the Course I returned to 32 Sqn RCT
